I had a nice fun ride in the rain yesterday all the way up to Claverack, NY for work. Just straight poured the entire way up there. Along the way I encountered many people not having their headlights on but using their wiper blades. This got me thinking, with all the technological advances in the auto industry and 50mpg cars out there, why has something so simple as day time running lights not a REQUIREMENT on all cars for safety? You have automakers out there boasting 9 IIHS safety awards but yet we haven’t fought to make it a requirement for simple, inexpensive safety equipment.
Honestly I just don’t get it. cars have like 20 airbags in them now but god forbid we put automatic headlights on a car to avoid the need in using the 20 airbags in the first place. Not a fan of daytime headlights? Fine, matter of preference but don’t complain when you are in the fog and some asshole hasn’t turned on his lights and you can barely see him. Here’s another one, turn on the damn headlights when you turn on the wiper blades. Can’t be hard to have a car do that automatically. There’s a different button for the wipers being on and the windshield wash so it’s not like you would be flashing everyone on the road as you cleaned off a bug.
There is just so much simple shit that I just don’t understand how it hasn’t been thought of. For instance, make cars not start unless the driver seat belt is buckled. Automakers need to stop worrying about MPG so damn much and actually focus on little shit to make life safer on the road. I don’t need to worry about rollover safety rating so much if there is shit to help prevent a rollover situation in the first place.
